The Importance of A Script

In the past, there were no scripts for Taiwanese Opera. Before performing, actors had to obtain the general idea of the particular drama from the so-called “storyteller” who had scripts in their mind. Actors simply had to extemporize by themselves. “Lack of professional playwrights and directors were the worst problem of traditional Chinese Opera”, said Chen Shen-fu. The actors acted what the storyteller had told them despite the deteriorated quality of the storytellers as well as the inadvertence and lack of logic through verbal telling.
Chen figured that a professional Chinese Opera troupe should put on its own play. Thus, after taking over the Ming Hwa Yuan, Chen immediately recruited a team of playwrights, and appointed Chen Shen-guo, the fourth son of the founder Chen Ming-ji, to be chief playwright and director. Each year they have to create and produce one to two large dramas. The Ming Hwa Yuan would first release their new large drama in places like National Theater Hall or the National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Then it tours around townships around Taiwan to give the second and third round of the drama, sometimes on outdoor stage, or in school auditoriums.

Chen, Sheng-guo, the Chief Playwright & Director

Chen Sheng-guo, one of members of the second generation from the Chen family, strived to make new scripts and edit the old ones in order to develop better scripts for significant public performance. When he was young, Chen was good at telling stories; he could even draw comics. His brothers took turns reading his comic, which was rather popular at the time without other types of entertainment. Chen used to work as a log keeper in his brother, Chen Sheng-fu’s Jia Yu Movie Corporation. He learned lots of filming techniques and the dramatic tempo of a film. Now, Chen Sheng-guo contributes all of his experiences to enrich Taiwanese Opera. For the past ten years, when talking about reviving traditional theatric forms, people would think of the shortage of good playwrights. However, Chen Sheng-guo, the fourth son of the Chen family, is a very unique talent in this field. His scripts have made the Ming Hwa Yuan evolve to a higher level of dramatic performance.
