Spider Goblin-Chen Jiau-shien

Chen Jau-shien played a role in her sister, Chen Jau-ting’s talent show for graduation. Then Chen Jau-shien became the leading Spider Goblin character in the Students’ Taiwanese Opera Club of Xihu Elementary School. In this picture, second-grade Jau-shien showed her sweet childish smiles while performing in her sister’s first Taiwanese Opera in Xihu Elementary School. However, this is not her first time to perform on stage. When she was only four years old, she had played a role with her mom, Miss Suen Tsuei-feng in Singing Slowly and Tenderly, which was one of the Mother TV series on PTS(Public Television Service). For a girl grows up in an opera troupe, this experience may be nothing big deal. However, our teacher told us that during the years when Jau-shien was in Xihu Elementary School, our Students’ Taiwanese Opera Club was famous because of Jau-shien’s performance.

Concentration on Study

Jau-shien’s elder sister, Jau-ting grew up in Pingtung with the Ming Hwa Yuan until she returned to Taipei to go to elementary school. However, Jau-shien was different. She was born after her parents moved back to Taipei. Therefore, when Jau-shien was little, she was not good at Taiwanese at all. During Chinese New Year, Jau-shien had to go through some hard time to get her grandpa, Chen Ming-ji’s red envelope. Thus, every Chinese New Year, Jau-shien asked her parents to practice speaking Taiwanese with her on their way back to Pingtung for family reunion. She practiced Taiwanese in the car with her mom by reading every word on the signboards passing by. To her surprise, she found that the most frequently used words on the signboards were “betel nuts.”
Of course now Jau-shien can speak very fluent Taiwanese. However, she seldom joins the performances of the troupe because she has to concentrate on her studies in Taipei Municipal Ta Tung Senior High School. Besides academic studies, she is the vice-president of the Sunshine club in her school. This club helps those who are in need of help. Jau-shien is also very good at folk dancing because she started to learn it when she was only five. Her mom Suen Tsuei-feng takes great pride in her talents. In the end, she sang us part of the lyrics of Spider Goblin, “Spider, Spider, Spitting long threads …” Jau-shien’s voice is pleasant and resonant that makes us want to hear it over and over again.
