Dr. Brougham considers herself the richest personin the world
¡@¡@ In Taiwan, people always refer to ¡§Studio Classroom¡¨ magazine when they talk about how they learned English in Taiwan. It is not unusual for some families to involve grand-parents to grand-children to listen to Studio Classroom in a roll.

82 years old Dr. Brougham

¡@¡@Ms. Doris Brougham is 82 years old right now, but she still drives to Da-Zhi to work every day. More than three fourths of her life was dedicated to Taiwan. She is both a teacher and a missionary. She devotes herself actively to educational; what is more, she also cares about poor children, Aboriginal Taiwanese, and convicts.

¡@¡@When we interviewed her in her studio, she talked to us with fluent Chinese mixed with Taiwanese and Aboriginal Taiwanese as well. It really impressed us very much. And her understanding of every Chinese custom made us admire her from the deep bottom of our hearts. Because she understands the true meaning of giving that she enjoys giving away to the needy, which makes her the richest person on earth.

She started to preach in China from 1948, and came to Taiwan in 1951.

The native Taiwanese called her ¡§Rebecca¡¨.

¡@¡@Dr. Doris Brougham came from Seattle USA. As many other foreign missionaries, she grew up in a typical Christian family. She was raised with the love of her parents and God. At one time, she heard of a priest talked about his experience in China, she raised her hand and said, ¡§I will go there one day, and I will help Chinese to fulfill their needs.¡¨ She was only 12, and just a little girl with blond hair and green eyes named Dorothy. Everyone thought it was a dream of a little girl, and never took it seriously.

¡@¡@The 21-year-old ardent Dorothy arrived at China and was eager to start her missionary work, however, the civil war broke out and she was forced to leave. At that time, her father in the US passed away, so the church asked her if she wanted to go home, with tears in her eyes she just said¡¨ I want to go to Formosa¡¨. This decision made her story in Taiwan last till today.

¡@¡@Doris arrived at Taiwan in 1951and chose rural Hauling to do her missionary work. Most aboriginals looked at her as if they were looking at an animal in the zoo, some kids even burst out crying the moment they saw her. She travelled over mountains and valleys for five whole years to visit aboriginal people there. Then she went to Taichung and Taipei to preach, and also recorded radio programs to preach the Gospel to Taiwanese.

She established Studio Classroom in 1962

The Ministry of Education awarded her a Golden Bell in 1969

¡@¡@In the 60s, the economy of Taiwan was beginning to boom and Dr. Brougham found that young people in Taiwan could not speak or write English very well, and they did not have enough money to learn English. She decided to devote herself in English teaching, and ¡§Studio classroom¡¨ was on air since1 August of 1962. The lively content stirred up the wave of learning English immediately. At the same year, when the great literature master, Lin YuTang, edited a series of English textbooks for high school students, he specifically appointed her to help him record the tapes.

¡@¡@Dr. Brougham cared very much about the welfares of the minorities. In years, she has been raising money for them from various sources. She held an English summer camp for tribal children in 1999 with World Vision Taiwan. And from 2003 till 2005, she worked with HTC Company and had Studio Classroom teachers teaching English classes to the remote tribal children every month. She is full of curiosity about life. She learned to dive at the age of 56, and learned to use computer at the age of 60. The current new online service, ¡§Cyber Village¡¨ by Studio Classroom was surprisingly materialized from her idea. The website offers role-playing, friends making, and language learning features.

For the missionary work, she sold the Saxophone her deceased father left her
¡@¡@Dr. Brougham not only devoted her whole self to Taiwan, she also donated most of her salary. She could not go home for the funerals of her parents because she could not afford the airplane ticket. Moreover, she turned down the marriage proposal offered by her beloved due to her unwillingness to leave Taiwan, for that, she has remained single. In order to do the missionary work, she even sold the Saxophone which she had kept for almost 30 years since her deceased father gave to her as a legacy.

The endless love and passion for Taiwan

Her beloved puppy Buddy

¡@¡@Dr. s Brougham told us that she has endless love and passion toward Taiwan. When Taiwan was forced to withdraw from the United Nations in 1971, the political and economical situation was very unstable then, and many people immigrated to other countries, but she chose to stay in Taiwan. In addition, she was the first one to donate money to the government, and voluntarily wrote to the US congressmen to emphasize the importance of Taiwan to the peace of Asia.

¡@¡@After the 921 Taiwan earthquake, Dr. Brougham went to the stricken area to relieve the people of their needs . She has obtained the permanent residency of the Republic of Taiwan years ago, and made the decision to spend the rest of her life here. On the 10th of August in 2008, the Protestant churches held a grand concert for her to pay tribute to her and thanked her dedication to Taiwan.

¡@¡@¡§I¡¦m standing by here if you need anything¡¨ With her brilliant blue eyes and smiling face, 82 years old Dr. Brougham is just like the blond young lady 60 years ago. Her words are not perfunctory but a commitment of a life time.

One sentence she gave to Taiwan was ¡§Keep on going!¡¨
¡@¡@There are a lot of difficulties that she has been through with people living in Taiwan and she has considered herself as a Taiwanese long time ago. Right now, Dr. Brougham cherished herself as a Taiwanese even more. She wants to tell people of Taiwan that we should think highly of ourselves, and value this island. More than that, we should know the goal of our lives, and be hopeful and visionary, and work hand in hand for our own country. ¡§Keep on going, and never give up!¡¨ said her.
